In 1815, Phra Phuttaloetla Naphalai or King Rama II made his royal visit to the city of Sam Khok to preside over the lotus festival considered as a traditional practice of people in the community. During his recreation in the riverside pavilion, located on the east bank of the Chao Phraya River, the citizens faithfully greeted him with many lotus flowers, which prompted the King to rename the city “Pathum Thani”, meaning “the City of Lotus Flowers”.
Pathum Thani vastly expanded its role in Thai society, conforming to the provincial slogan described below.
“The City of Beautiful Lotus Flowers
Together with Golden Rice Fields
Unveil Traditional Practices of Mons
And Move On with Dharma Mind
Enchanted by the Palace of Unity
Simply with the Glow of the Chao Phraya River
Forever the Reputation of Industrial Progress”
